How Do The Boiler Scrappage Schemes Work in 2024?
The new Boiler Scrappage Schemes have evolved in more generous schemes whereby you can now get a 100% free boiler if you have a non condensing boiler and are claiming a benefit.
OR you can get a £7500 grant if you upgrade your gas boiler to a Air Source heat Pump.
How Did The Original Boiler Scrappage Scheme Work?
In 2009 the Government wanted to get rid of G-rated boilers and replace them with a high-efficiency condensing boilers.
The £400 boiler scrappage scheme was a program which gave applicants £400 cashback for replacing their old, in-efficient boilers.
This was run by The energy saving Trust who gave you a voucher that entitled you to cashback after your boiler was replaced.
You had 12 weeks to apply for the cashback or you would lose it. The £400 funding was given towards the cost of a brand-new A-rated boiler and not as cash. This scheme ended in 2012

The scheme was announced by the Chancellor Alistair Darling in a Pre-Budget Report at the end of 2009 and launched on 5 January 2010. To qualify, one had to live in England and have a working G-rated boiler.
Successful applicants received a voucher for £400 off the price of either a modern A-rated boiler or a renewable heating system (such as a biomass boiler, heat pump or micro CHP). After a completed installation, the voucher could be redeemed from the Energy Saving Trust for its £400 monetary value.
Was The the boiler scrappage scheme a Success?
The scheme was taken up widely and all 125,000 vouchers were claimed within a few months, with the scheme then closing.
Some suppliers were criticised for high prices of the replacement boilers offered.
Even though some of the major power companies were offering a further £400 discount to match the government voucher, their overall price was still considerably greater than that from an independent fitter.
