Introduction To Grants For Pensioners
There are a number of free government grants to help many pensioners who are living in fuel poverty.
This post is to make all pensioners who are currently struggling to pay heating bills aware of the many grants and schemes available to them.
There is cash assistance and 100% Free grants to help insulate homes properly and to upgrade heating.

What Is Pension Credit ?
Pension Guarantee Credit is an income based benefit that tops up your income if your existing weekly income is below a certain threshold.
Pension Savings Credit – This provides a top up to your weekly income if you have saved some money, or your income is higher than state pension.
Who Is Entitled To Pension Credit ?
Currently all pensioners are entitled to a minimum income of :
Single Claim – £177.10
Joint Couple Claim – £270.30
If your income is below this, you should make a claim
Why Claim Pension Credit?
All those that qualify for Pension Credit are also eligible for other means tested benefits such as :
Free Dental & Eye care & Free Heating & Insulation Grants.

How To Claim Pension Credit

Winter Fuel Payment
You will be able to claim a tax-free payment of £100 – £300 to assist you with paying your heating bills.
Who Is Eligible For A Winter Fuel Payment
You were born on or before 5th May 1953, and receive
- A state pension,
- Pension credit,
- Jobseeker’s allowance
- Income related employment and support allowance,
Cold Weather Payment
The government will give a payment to older people and those on certain benefits, to help cover heating costs when temperatures hit zero in your area.
They will make a payment of £25 for every seven consecutive days that the average temperature is – or is forecast to be – 0°C or below.
The payment should be paid into the same account your benefits are paid into, within 14 working days of the cold weather.

The Warm Home Discount
The big energy suppliers are legally required to give certain people a rebate of £140 on their energy bills between Octobers – April.
Those who qualify include people who receive pension credit and low income families.

Those who receive certain benefits and are struggling to pay their bills may be able to arrange for the benefits office to pay the fuel bill automatically out of their benefits and contribute an agreed amount.
