What Is A Back Boiler ?
A back boiler is a very old heating system used in the 60s and 70s as the central heating system for heating the whole house and for heating water.
They were usually made by Baxi Bermuda which was the market leader and they were situated just behind a fireplace.
Backboilers were fueled by a gas fire or solid fuel and were connected to a cylinder full of hot water which was heated and then distributed to the hot water taps.
In the past, they were the most used boiler, until the trend changed and people started replacing them with a condensing combi boiler
Condensing boilers are more efficient and cost-effective and you can get up to 20% more heat for your money by replacing your backboiler to a combi.
Back boilers now are no longer manufactured but around 5% of the UK population are still using a backboiler as their main source of heating.
Be aware that the Uk Government are giving 100% grants to replace old backboilers with a combi.
Are Back Boilers Now Illegal?
Yes, back boilers have been illegal to install since 2005.
However, it is not illegal to have a back boiler in your home that existed before 2005.
If you have a backboiler fitted, you would be wise to consider replacing it for a combi as they will save you money in the long run.
How Long Do Baxi Bermuda Back Boilers Last

Back Boiler Removal - Is This Included In The Grant?
Yes. As well as capping off the gas and water supply to the old backboiler, the old heating system will be completely removed too as part of the grant. There is no extra charge for this.
When Is The Back Boiler Scheme Due To End?

Let’s take a look at a few facts about combi and back boilers to help you make your choice.
Baxi Bermuda Back boilers are still present in many UK homes, particularly with those homes built between the ‘60s and ‘80s.
A back boiler is a boiler that is built in behind a gas fire or solid fuel fire that is used to heat the home much like a central heating system.
These older systems usually require a lot of maintenance and are not particularly efficient. Average efficiency is around 60 -70% .
Back Boilers are generally very reliable with not many moving parts to go wrong , you will eventually need to replace it.
Energy Efficiency
In the back boilers versus combi boilers debate, combi boilers win hands down.

For this reason Combi boilers are a good choice for small homes or flats where space is very limited.

Hot Water Supply versus Demand
The greatest drawback of combi boilers is their ability to provide hot water for simultaneous use.
Traditional boilers fire up twice a day, heating up the water whether you need it or not.
While this has the disadvantage of not being energy efficient, it also means that you have a reserve of hot water that can be delivered to multiple taps in the home.
However, combi boilers may not be able to meet your needs if you have two people taking hot showers at the same time.
A system boiler may be a better choice in that case. You should also know that having a tank is not always a benefit when it comes to the water supply. Having a tank also means that your hot water can run out.

How efficient is a back boiler?
An old standard efficiency Baxi Bermuda back boiler is usually less than 70% efficient compared to a modern day condensing boiler which will be over 90% efficient.

In addition to regular servicing, carbon monoxide alarms should be installed and tested regularly.
All homes with an open-flued system should be kept well ventilated to reduce the risk of carbon momoxide poisoning.
Checking the Air Vent
If your boiler locks out, one of the first checks to be undertaken would be to check the air vent.
The locking out process is a safety mechanism so that carbon monoxide fumes are not omitted.
The boiler’s air vent should be checked regularly to keep it clear from blockages in order to help protect from dangerous gasses being leaked into the living spaces within the property.
Resetting the Pilot Light
Another common problem with boilers is ignition matters.
Wear and tear can cause parts to fail including the thermocouple which results in the pilot light going out.
Resetting the pilot light is a tricky job however there should be instructions within the boiler’s manual.
If the problem frequently reoccurs it is highly recommended that the matter is escalated to a qualified Gas Safe engineer.
