Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Benefits and Support

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a disability benefit provided by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for individuals with long-term health conditions or disabilities.

This benefit is designed to help cover the extra costs that may arise due to these conditions, regardless of whether you are employed or not.

PIP consists of two components: the daily living rate and the mobility rate. You may qualify for one or both components, each of which has a standard and enhanced rate. The current rates are as follows:
Daily Living Component**: Standard rate is £72.65 and enhanced rate is £108.55.
– **Mobility Component**: Standard rate is £28.70 and enhanced rate is £75.75.

In addition to the financial support from PIP, claimants can access various freebies, discounts, and extra support to assist with daily living. Below are some of the key benefits:

 Council Tax Discounts

– **Potential Savings**: Up to £2,171 per year.
– **Details**: You may be eligible for a council tax discount if you receive either component of PIP. Contact your local authority to determine your eligibility. If classified as “severely mentally impaired,” you could qualify for a full exemption from council tax.

Blue Badge

– **Potential Savings**: £3,800 per year.
– **Details**: Blue Badges help disabled individuals park closer to their destination. Using your PIP award letter, you can apply for a Blue Badge from your local council. Some councils provide badges for free, while others may charge up to £10.

Benefit Boost
– **Potential Value**: £7,334.40 per year.
– **Details**: PIP recipients may qualify for additional DWP benefits, including Housing Benefit, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Working Tax Credit, Employment and Support Allowance (if you receive the daily living component), and Pension Credit (if you receive the daily living component).

Capped Water Bills
– **Potential Savings**: £1,053 per year.
– **Details**: Under the WaterSure Scheme, PIP claimants with high water consumption due to medical conditions may receive capped water bills. Eligibility varies by water supplier.

Vehicle Tax Reduction
– **Potential Savings**: Up to £1,177.50 per year.
– **Details**: If you receive the standard rate mobility component of PIP, you can get a 50% reduction in vehicle tax. For the enhanced rate, you may receive a 100% reduction. Apply through the Post Office with your PIP award letter.

Motability Scheme
– **Potential Value**: £23,760 per year.
– **Details**: The Motability Scheme allows those on the enhanced mobility rate of PIP to use their allowance towards the cost of a new car, scooter, or powered wheelchair. Insurance, tax, and servicing are included.

Free Prescriptions
– **Potential Savings**: £115.80 per year.
– **Details**: Some PIP claimants may qualify for free NHS prescriptions through a Medical Exemption Certificate.

Disabled Person’s Railcard
– **Potential Savings**: £113 per year.
– **Details**: PIP recipients can apply for a Disabled Person’s Railcard, which costs £20 per year or £54 for three years, providing a third off rail travel.

Discounted Days Out
Potential Savings £72 per year.
– **Details**: Various attractions, including the National Trust and English Heritage, offer discounted entry for PIP claimants and their carers.

Disabled Facilities Grant
– **Potential Value**: Up to £30,000.
– **Details**: Disabled individuals needing home modifications can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant. Eligibility varies, and the maximum amounts differ by location.
