British Gas Boiler Grant

Free Insulation Scheme British Gas3

Are you thinking of replacing your old boiler?

British Gas Are indirectly funding  thousands of people via the ECO Scheme to get a brand new boiler fully fitted worth £2400 FREE OF CHARGE!

You may have heard of the government funded boiler replacement schemes over the last few years and wondered if they were real and could you apply.

this scheme is 100% real.

How Does The British Gas Boiler Grant  Work?

Under the free boiler scheme low-income households in receipt of a qualify benefit are entitled to a Free upgrade  to an A Rated energy-efficient boiler.

As a boiler is responsible for the majority of a home’s heating bill, it makes sense to have a boiler as efficient as possible fitted.

Most people cannot afford to pay up to £2300 for a new boiler to be fitted ( average cost ) so a big ticket item like this  would not be changed unless it was completely broken.
Many homes have boilers over 15 years old limping on and wasting lots of gas which is why the government have allocated funding for assisting with the cost.

Who Qualifies For The New Boiler Grant ?

The eligibility has changed for the Government Free Boiler Scheme for 2023

To qualify you have to meet all of the following conditions :

  • You are A HomeOwner or live with the home owner
  • You receive a qualifying benefit
  • Your Boiler is non condensing ( over 17 years old without a plastic pipe leading to outside ) OR
  • You have a BACKBOILER fitted behind the fire
  • Your Home Is Epc Rated  E -F -G

Home Insulation

Home Insulation is very important as it helps to keep your rental property feeling cosy as well as cutting your tenants ever increasing energy bills.

It is very important that you check your loft and walls for adequate insulation as you lose the majority of your expensive heat through both mediums.

Your walls and loft will greatly benefit from having insulation retrofitted.

Energy companies offer free insulation grants to help you make your home more energy efficient, thanks to the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) Scheme.

This blog will inform you about why you need to insulate your home and if you are eligible for a free landlord  grant

All Insulation is  generally free of charge except for EWI to all tenants in receipt of a qualifying benefit or on a low income.

What Are The Benefits Of   Insulation For Your Home?

Insulation creates a barrier for your expensive heat to have to pass which will keep your heat in the house for longer instead of it escaping through the roof.

The Energy Saving Trust calculate that the average saving per year from installing loft insulation is approximately £240.

For Solid Wall you will save up to £500 per year Your house will feel warmer during cold weather and improve the energy efficiency rating of your home.

You will also reduce your carbon footprint by around 990kg of CO2 per year compared to an uninsulated loft.

Typical Heat Loss From Your Home

Heat loss will depend on your house type but as a rough guide you can expect to lose

  • 25% of its heat through the roof
  • 33% through the walls
  • 15% through the floors
  • 15% through draughts
  • 20% through windows.

Why  A Government Grant For Free Insulation?

Free Government Grants For Home Insulation  are available in England, Scotland and Wales and are funded via the Energy Company Obligation (ECO)  to improve the efficiency of homes.

These Grants have helped many people to lower their heating bills and are funded by  a levy to every fuel bill in the uk .

This is in part to achieve the government’s goal of being net carbon neutral by 2050 but as a main aim of tackling fuel poverty across the UK.

There have been over 2.4 million free installations of insulation since the government brought in the scheme.

Are There Grants For Foam Insulation?

There are at present no grants for foam insulation.

We strongly recommend you do not have foam insulation in your home at any cost. The link below will show you that foam has no use in a domestic home and you should use traditional tried and tested insulation instead.

SEE HERE FOR FOAM INSULATION WARNING

Yes they do
Pensioners, whether they are a home owner or a renter, are eligible for home improvement grants including free insulation  through this government-backed, funded scheme too.
Pensioners will need to be claiming Pension Credit either savings credit or Gaurantee Credit to qualify.
OAPs can also claim down the Local Area Delivery Route where no benefits will be needed.

How Does Insulation Work:

The sole purpose of the insulation in your home is to slow down (as much as possible) the transfer of the heat from inside your home to outside.

Materials with a low U Value are the best types of insulation .i.e foam based materials are very low U Values and are great insulators. Insulation works by reducing:

  • Conduction, by having very little mass.
  • Convection, by trapping air molecules and restricting its movement.
  • Radiation, by having just enough mass to slow the transfer of heat by radiation.

Types Of  Insulation Used For Homes

  • Rigid Foam Insulation– rigid insulation is commonly used in the walls as they are built, underneath floors and in suspended ceilings
  •  Wool Type loft insulation – this is the most common form of loft insulation for cold roofs and is typically Fibreglass or Mineral fibre based
  • Aluminium foil backed insulation – If your loft area has “warm roof” insulation (insulation laid between the rafters in the roof rather than the joists, this is likely what you have although I also see Fibreglass wool used.
  • Multilayer foil insulation – not as common but is used in more specific applications where other forms of insulation may not be suitable.
  • Blown In Insulation – for cavities. Usually rockwool or bead
  • Foam Spray Insulation

Can You Get Free  Insulation if not on benefits?

Some councils do a scheme where you dont need to be on benefits to receive free insulation. Ask your local council if they operate a LA FLEX Scheme.
