Government Boiler Replacement Scheme 2021

Government Boiler Replacement Scheme 2021

You may have heard about the Government Boiler Replacement Scheme over the last 8 years and wondered if it is genuine or a scam.

This is where all qualifying applicants can change their boiler very cheaply and in some very rare cases 100% FREE.

Most people however have to pay a small contribution , usually between £499 – £999 which is still very generous and below half price.

I can confirm that the National Boiler Scheme is 100 % genuine and if you are interested you should get your application in as soon as possible as funding is very limited now.

The current scheme is still in operation and ends in April 2022 and may not be extended.

Government Funded Boiler Replacement Scheme 2021 FAQs

Everything You Need To Know !

Lots of confusion as to whether the boilers are still free or not and I still get people applying on my website thinking that they do not have to pay anything.

Free boilers ended in March 2017 for all gas properties and EVERYONE now has to pay a small contribution towards having a grant boiler.

Why Is There a Contribution Now?

The government has reduced the amount of funding it will pay to installers who are still participating in the scheme.

This shortfall in funding means that the installers would be installing boilers at a loss. You will still get a boiler for very favourable terms and you should apply right away.

How much  is the customer contribution?

Most contributions start from £499 up to £999 for a straight swap and is still a fantastic saving. If you would like a combi conversion, you should expect to pay up to £3000 full price with the grant giving you back around £1500.

What Is the full price of the boilers?

Full price of  boilers fitted privately is £2299 so there is a massive saving of around £1500. This assumes a straight swap with nothing else needed such as a vertical flu or gas pipe upgrades etc.

Who Can Apply For The Government Boiler Replacement Scheme ?

People claiming low income benefits such as Tax Credits, Pension Credit etc with a boiler over 7 years old are eligible. Home Owners Only or you must live with the homeowner.

Private rented sector are now excluded from the scheme as landlords are required to be responsible for providing their own heating for their properties.

Are There Grants / Scrappage Scheme For Oil / LPG Boilers?

The oil boiler grant scheme ended in 2018 and was very generous with grants up to £5000 available.

None of the government boiler replacement schemes include oil boiler grants at the current time of writing 2021. However, there are some companiies that have some funding towards it so worth looking around.

You get get up to 25% grant towards it which will reduce the contribution you have to pay.

There are grants available to replace oil / LPG boilers (or any non-renewable heating system) with a renewable energy system, such as a heat pump or solar panels but you should expect to pay a small contribution as there is not 100% funding.

As a sweetener you can receive payments from the government for the heat your new system produces under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). This is worth up to £1500 per year.

Government Boiler Replacement Scheme -Free Extras?

There still seems to be a new ( or not as the case may be) phenomenon seeping around the current boiler Scrappage Scheme where a small number of qualifying clients feel that they are also entitled to FREE extras.
This is in addition to getting a brand new boiler supplied and fitted for free or heavily discounted to a third of the price !
Some people are very cheeky indeed ! lol.

What extras are being asked for ?

Examples of  what I have come across since the inception of the scheme in 2013 are listed below. These include:

  • Changing their existing 28 KW boiler for a much larger 38 KW Worcester Bosch at no extra cost .
  • Choosing the boiler model they require.
  • Existing Leaks on the system repaired.
  • Asking for just  this small radiator fitted for free with the promise that he will get you lots of new customers.
  • Moving  the boiler to a new location for free
  • Converting the back boiler to a Combi for free.

                ……AND MANY MORE!

Gift Horse In the Mouth?

There does seem to be an abundance of ” Gift Horse “ customers circulating around this fantastic Boiler grant scheme ! lol
I have also had some clients threaten to cancel too if their demands are not met.
This is usually very craftily done after the installer has committed to the application and paid out for surveys.
Not Cricket !

Please Be Grateful!

Unfortunately this scheme has brought out the worst in people and I have encountered a  lot of ungrateful people out there that do not deserve a boiler on favourable terms.
Indeed I have met some who feel they are doing myself and the  installers a favour by allowing us to fit them a boiler.

Action Taken To Counter this.

I have had to take to designing a presentation pack to show to my customers showing what is actually included “ for their money “ and a Transparent Price List for all these extras that some clients feel they are entitled to!
This has helped.

I do try to weed out the non payers /  gift horse customers, at the beginning of the process  so that they can cancel before my installers have invested any time and money in Surveys.
This time could be better spent on genuine customers who will be grateful for anything free from the government.

This post probably applies to under 5 % of applicants with the rest being a pleasure to deal with and well deserving.
The Boiler Grant scheme is still available at time of writing ( Jan 2021 )

  1. I have had the work on provision of new boiler . My radiators at last winter to spring season were noisy , a knocking sound which was unnerving . I told the workers who were sent by the government’choice . Should this work have been examined ?
What can be done about it ? I am on income support .

    1. Hi Joan
You will need to contact the original company who installed as they are responsible for the warranty.Lots of small companies working on the scheme and the only redress you have will be to contact them. Thanks
