What are air source heat pumps?

Air source heat pumps, also known as ASHPs, are heating systems that extract heat from the outside air and transfer it inside your home.

They work on the same principle as a refrigerator but in reverse.

Instead of cooling the air, ASHPs use a refrigerant to absorb heat from the outdoor air and release it into your home.

This process is powered by electricity, and the heat generated can be used to warm water for radiators, underfloor heating systems, or even to provide hot water for your taps and showers.

How do air source heat pumps work?

To understand how air source heat pumps work, let’s take a closer look at the two main components: the outdoor unit and the indoor unit. The outdoor unit, often referred to as the heat pump, contains a fan that draws in air from the outside. As the air passes through the heat pump, a refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air and evaporates into a gas. The gas is then compressed, which increases its temperature. This hot gas is then passed through a heat exchanger inside the indoor unit, where it transfers its heat to the water or air circulating in your home. The gas then returns to its liquid state and is ready to absorb more heat from the outside air. This continuous cycle allows air source heat pumps to provide a constant and reliable source of heat for your home.
