The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The scheme will be open to all domestic properties in England and Wales until 2025.
This will enable many homeowners to upgrade to a more environmentally-friendly new Air Source Heat Pump which are up to 30% cheaper to run than a conventional gas guzzling boiler.
ASHP are the way of the future and the government has committed to funding this change over for the next 5 years.
The government has allocated £450 million to dish out these grants under its new Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
These pumps provide a much greener way to heat your home – and at a lower cost too.
How to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
You will be able to apply for £5,000 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump or biomass boiler.
Homeowners could also get £6,000 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump.
You will need to pay the difference if the pump costs more than the grant but the idea is to get the amount closer to what you would pay when installing a gas boiler.

Ban Gas Boilers By 2035
To help with the government target of banning all gas boiler sales by 2035 , lots of cash incentives are being dangled in front of cash property owners to replace their old gas boilers with heat pumps as soon as possible.
Carbon emissions by boilers are a major source of carbon so boilers are the main priority at the moment
Cuts in VAT and cash grants will do lots to help the UK meet its carbon targets.
What Are Heat Pumps?
There are two types of air-source heat pumps, air-to-water systems and air-to-air systems.
They both heat your home at a lower temperature than gas and oil boilers, so will reduce your energy bills, at a time when they are reaching record highs.
They work very similar to a domestic fridge in that it absorbs solar heat either from the air, earth or water.
The heat pump then uses a small amount of electricity to compress this heat into a suitably high temperature – ready to be used for space heating and hot water.
How Much Do Heat Pumps Cost?
Air sourced heat pumps – purchase and installation costs anywhere between £8,000 and £14,000.
Ground sourced heat pumps can cost between £15,000 and £25,000,
A Gas Boiler is typically around £2000 -£2500
It is hoped that Joe public will spend the price of a boiler to have a heat pump fitted instead which will cost him the same amount of money as the £5000 grant will go towards the cost.
Can All Properties Apply?

- The property will need to have enough power to support an installation capacity of 45kWth or kilowatt thermal, which covers most homes.
- Your property will also need to be fully insulated with loft and cavity wall insulation
- You will need a valid energy performance certificate of a minimum rating of D
