You will have to bite the bullet and buy one yourself .

Oil central heating

cropped tate Logo

Find out how oil central heating works, where it is used and why you should upgrade where possible

Around 5% of homes in the UK have oil fired  central heating instead of gas central heating . Oil boilers and LPG are usually fitted in rural areas such as Scotland and Wales and also Northern Ireland.

These Homes with oil central heating aren’t connected to the main gas grid.

Like LPG, heating oil is delivered by road and stored in a tank.

How does oil central heating work?

This works very much the same as gas heating but Heating oil is  used instead where an oil-fired boiler heats water, then provides central heating via radiators and hot water to the taps in your home.

Most condensing oil-fired boilers are floor-standing and will be condensing.

How much does oil central heating cost?

The average price of energy generated by kerosene in October 2022 was 10.3p per kWh, according to Sutherland Tables, which collects domestic fuel price data.

An average ‘medium energy-use’ home uses around 12,000Kwh per year for heating and hot water. Heating that home with kerosene heating oil would cost around £1,200 per year.

But your actual heating bill depends on:

  • the size of your home
  • how well it’s insulated
  • the efficiency of your oil boiler
  • how much heating and hot water you use
  • the price of your heating oil
  • where you live in the UK.

Oil central heating pros and cons

Pros

  • Oil is an efficient fuel, so you get a good return on each unit of energy
  • Replacing a standard oil boiler with a more efficient modern condensing one is relatively straightforward
  • You can stock-up on kerosene in advance, when the price is lower.

Cons

  • Heating oil is delivered by road so there’s a risk you could run out while you’re waiting for a delivery. But you can get systems which monitor the oil level in your tank and automatically tell your supplier when you need a refill
  • The price of heating oil fluctuates, depending on global demand
  • Oil is a fossil fuel and produces carbon dioxide when it’s burned, so it’s not environmentally-friendly
  • Installing oil central heating can be expensive and disruptive
  • Oil boilers generally limit the hot-water flow rate to ensure it’s as hot as it should be. This means the hot-water flow rate is lower than with a gas combi or hot-water cylinder system, and the temperature declines as more water is used
  • The heating oil tank can be unsightly and needs servicing annually – find out more in our heating oil tank guide.

What Is An Oil Boiler?

An oil boiler delivers central heating and domestic hot water to a property by burning oil.

Oil fired boilers are not the cheapest heating and are usually found in rural areas or off gas grid areas.

This is opposed to natural gas, the most common boiler type in the UK, which is delivered via the mains as and when needed.

Scotland and Wales have an abundance of these oil boilers as they are densley rural.

Oil Tanks Needed

The oil used by the boiler is delivered in bulk by a lorry and is stored at the property in a storage tank usually located externally.

By storing the oil onsite, oil or electric heat pumps are  a great option for properties that aren’t connected to the gas network.

Oil boiler systems are available as combis , system and regular units.

What types of Oil boilers are Available ?

Oil Combi boilers

Oil combi boilers are single cost-effective heating systems that provide central heating and hot water on demand.

A combi will deliver both without the need for any additional tanks or cylinders.

Oil Boiler Combis are ideal for small to medium sized homes, but will struggle to meet the higher hot water demands of homes with multiple bathrooms.

If you have more than 2 bathrooms, a system or regular boiler would be a more suitable option as they store hot water in a cylinder.

Oil system boilers

An oil system boiler directly heats the central heating system and stores domestic hot water in a cylinder.

They receive a supply of water directly from the mains, removing the need for a cold water tank in the loft which is essential for regular boilers.

This puts system boilers in between combi and regular boilers in terms of how they operate.

Oil Regular boilers

Regular oil boilers are the oldest boiler type, most commonly found in large traditional properties.

Rather than taking water directly from the mains, like combi and system boilers, regular boilers are fed water by a cold water storage tank in the loft.

They directly heat the central heating system while storing domestic hot water in a cylinder.

It’s widely recommended that you should only have a regular boiler installed if your existing heating system already includes a regular boiler.

This is known as a like-for-like boiler swap.

No matter which type of oil boiler you have installed, a storage tank will need to be fitted in an outdoor area.

Do you need an oil boiler replacement?

Eventually, your boiler will reach a point where it won’t be able to perform as well as it once did.

This could be in terms of efficiency, reliability or overall performance.

By reading this article, it’s likely that you’re already considering a new oil boiler.

If you’re not sure, here are some signs that it’s time for an oil boiler replacement:

  • Your current boiler was installed more than 10 years ago
  • It’s less efficient than it used to be which has seen your heating bills rise
  • You’ve noticed some unusual sounds coming from the boiler or heating system
  • Constantly running into issues
  • Heating engineers have a hard time finding replacement parts
  • Your home isn’t as warm and comfortable as it once was

How Much Is a New Oil Boiler?

Grants For Oil Boilers

A new oil boiler will typically cost between €1,300 and €3,000. The oil boiler price depends on the following variables:

  • The manufacturer
  • The boiler model
  • The capacity of the boiler

A less powerful oil boiler will be cheaper than a high-capacity boiler. The size of your home and your hot water demands determine the size oil boiler that you will need.

If you are replacing one type of oil boiler with another type (such as swapping a system boiler with a combi boiler), you may need to pay additional costs.

These costs could include installing or removing the hot water cylinder or cold water storage tank.

Grants For Oil Heated Homes

How Does an Oil Boiler Work?

An oil boiler works by igniting liquid oil in a combustion chamber.

This process produces hot gases that are then passed through a heat exchanger (usually a copper coil) to heat water.

This heated water is then  pumped around the home to your radiators, taps and showers when it’s required.

An oil boiler works very similar to gas boilers except that it needs oil to fuel it  instead of gas.

The oil must be regularly delivered to the home in a tank. The oil is held in this storage tank until it is needed for heating and hot water.

Oil is very expensive to use as your main fuel.

How Efficient Is an Oil Boiler?

Modern oil boilers can have efficiencies of around 85% to 95%.

A new condensing oil boiler will typically have an efficiency of at least 90% while a non-condensing oil boiler will be around 85% efficient.

Older oil boilers tend to be 60% to 70% efficient. Boilers decrease in efficiency as they age, so the longer you have it, the less efficient it becomes.

You can follow the tips below to improve the efficiency of your oil boiler:

  • Use room thermostats
  • Use a boiler interlock to prevent short cycling when you don’t need heat or hot water
  • Use a cylinder thermostat for the hot water tank
  • Programme heating and hot water separately
  • Place thermostatic radiator valves on radiators

Can You Install Your Own Oil Boiler?

You should hire an Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC) engineer to install your new oil boiler for you.

Even though this is not a legal requirement, it’s recommended in order to ensure the safety and quality of the installation.

OFTEC engineers have completed approved training courses and must periodically take assessments to make sure they are up-to-date with the best practices.

Once the OFTEC engineer has installed your new oil boiler, they will give you a certificate that confirms the work carried out meets industry standards.

What Kind of Oil Is Used in an Oil Boiler?

Most condensing oil boilers in use kerosene oil. It’s cleaner to burn than heavier oils (such as gas oil) and is also more efficient.

Research is currently underway to find a more sustainable alternative to kerosene oil.

Are Oil Boilers Expensive To Run?

As you will be aware, LPG & OIL heating are the most expensive forms of heating .

Running an oil boiler tends to cost about 25 % more as running a gas boiler.

LPG heating is is a lot more expensive than mains gas, but it’s a cheaper  option to installing electric heating if you are in an off gas area.
There are other costs too for renting tanks to hold the fuel.

Are Oil Boilers Efficient?

Oil is a more efficient fuel than gas or LPG

This is because oil boilers use nearly all of the heat and additional gas that’s created from the burning of fuel, turning this into extra heating energy so there’s less wastage.

This means you’ll get a good return on every unit of energy.

Will LPG & Oil  boilers be banned?

The government plans to phase-out high-carbon fossil fuel heating, including LPG, in off-gas-grid homes during the 2020s. New homes can’t have oil heating after 2025.

This is part of the UK government’s efforts to reach net zero carbon emissions they have announced a ban for all oil and LPG and gas boilers being fitted in new homes  in the UK by 2025.

This will force consumers to switch to alternative and greener options. This is why we believe there will not be any free LPG boilers in the future. Alternate forms of heating such as Air Source Heat Pumps, Solar PV will be favoured from this date.  See here

So when you need to replace your LPG central heating or oil heating , you’ll need to consider renewable heating sources or electric as LPG boilers will no longer be on sale.

However it has said that it won’t force homeowners to rip out central heating systems that are in good working order.

But it’s worth thinking ahead to what you might replace your oil boiler with when the time comes.

Lower carbon options to replace LPG Heating are:

  • Ground source heat pump air source heat pumps,
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Solar water heating
  • Biomass boilers
  • Electric Heating

What is an LPG boiler and how does it work?

LPG boilers work very much the same as a gas boiler except that for the fuel source.
LPG boilers use liquid petroleum gas which is stored in an external storage tank or bottles to heat water in the central heating system.
They produce hot water which can be used to provide heating or hot water for your taps.
They are commonly found in off gas areas with park homes being a particular favourite.

Why No LPG / Oil Boilers Grants In The Future?

We do not anticipate any grants forthcoming in the future for LPG Or Oil heating due to the government move away from fossil fuel heating.

The last free boiler  scheme  for oil and LPG boilers  ended in 2018 with over 100,000 boilers being exchanged for free as part of the government Boiler Scrappage scheme.

Only non condensing mains gas boilers and gas back boilers  will be eligible for this grant.

Oil Vs Gas Boilers – Which Is best?

An oil boiler should reach the same efficiency as a gas boiler.

According to building regulations, oil boilers must have an energy rating of at least 86 per cent, or A+.

A condensing oil fired boiler will usually have an efficiency of 90 per cent or higher.

What Is The Difference Between Gas And Oil Boilers?

The main difference between a gas and an oil boiler is the way the appliances store their fuel.

An oil boiler requires a tank to store the oil until it is needed, whereas a gas boiler doesn’t need to store gas because it is connected to the mains.

Oil boilers are very commonly found in rural areas and where there is no gas main.

Home Improvement Grants

Oil Tank Regs

The base of the tank must be strong enough to support the weight of the tank and its contents.

The tank must sit on solid ground, either concrete or paving slabs that are at least 42mm thick and that extend out at least 300mm beyond the perimeter of the tank.

If the tank is located quite close to your house, a fire wall must be positioned between the tank and your home.

The Cost of  LPG Tank Rental

There are 2 options for fuel tanks.
You’ll have to pay a yearly charge of around £65 if your tank is above ground.   £130 if it’s underground.

LPG Central Heating

Around two hundred thousand homes which aren’t on the gas grid have to use LPG for heating. his is a very expensive way to heat your home.

LPG can fuel gas household appliances, including gas central heating and gas cookers.

The main difference between mains gas and LPG is that LPG is delivered by road and stored in a tank (rather than piped to your home).

You might have solely LPG central heating or use it as a back-up source if you have renewable heating or generate electricity from solar panels.

How does LPG central heating work?

LPG central heating is usually a ‘wet’ heating system, where an LPG-fired boiler heats water.

This then provides central heating through radiators and hot water to your taps.

Some boilers designed for mains gas can be converted to use LPG.

You’ll need to store LPG in a tank outside your home and arrange for it to be delivered by tanker. Alternatively you can use bottles which are mega expensive.
