What Is A Heat Pump?

heat pump is a device that uses electric to transfer heat from a cool space to a warm space by transferring thermal energy using a refrigeration cycle.

They work by cooling the cool space and warming the warm space.

Air source heat pumps are an  new type of renewable energy heating.

They work like a fridge in reverse by taking warmth from the air outside and using it to supply your home’s heating and hot water.

They will even work when temperatures get as low as -15C.

Heat pumps run on electricity so they will help the UK move away from fossil fuel heating.

Why A Free Air Source Heat Pump Scheme?

Many people in this day and age will not be able to afford the £12 K needed to replace their old boiler for a heat pump.

The government have stepped in and  are offering help to all people that receive a qualifying benefit or are on a low income.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, please make an application as you may be eligible!

How Does An Air Source Heat Pump Work ?

They work a bit like refrigerators in reverse.

An air source heat pump takes heat from the air and boosts it to a higher temperature using a compressor.

It then transfers the heat to the heating system in your home.

Air source heat pumps use the same kind of technology that  fridges and freezers use.

The pump pulls in air from outside, then uses it to heat a special refrigerant liquid.  As it warms up, the liquid turns into gas.

The warmth is compressed to increase its temperature – and provide lots of lovely heat for your home.

Once the gas has transferred its heat, it cools down, becomes liquid again. And returns to the start of the cycle.

The process only uses electricity and has an energy efficiency of over 350% – compared to an A-rated gas boiler, which is about 90% efficient.

Grants For Air Source Heat Pumps – 6 Reasons To Apply

Here are 6 reasons why you should consider swapping your oil or gas boiler, or  electric heating, for a heat pump:

  1. Grants Are Available

You could be entitled to a 100% grant or £7500 towards it.

  1. Reduce your energy bills

Moving to a heat pump means you can avoid the high prices associated with gas and oil.

Oil, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or electric heating are very expensive ways of heating and you will see a reduction to your energy bill if you move to a heat pump.

  1. No VAT to pay on installation

The government has recently announced 0% VAT on the installation of heat pumps and biomass boilers, which will last for 5 years, further reducing the cost of installation.

  1. Reduce your carbon footprint and combat climate change

Heat pumps are significantly more efficient than traditional boilers and use cleaner electricity, so will reduce your home’s carbon footprint. A heat pump takes heat at a low temperature from the air or ground, increases that heat to a higher temperature and transfers it into your home to provide heating and hot water.

  1. Save time and storage space by stopping fuel deliveries

If you’re using oil or LPG, you’ll no longer need to deal with fuel deliveries and can save space with not needing the storage for this anymore.

  1. Get ahead of the curve

Heat pumps are an important part of the future of heating, and installing one now will give you access to the latest technology and allow you to future proof your home.

The final bill will depend on whether your existing radiators are large enough or need to be replaced.

Fitting a ground source pump will cost much more – typically upwards of £15,000

How Much Is A Heat Pump To Buy?

You can buy a heat pump and fit yourself if you are handy and are good with electrics.

Air-to-air heat pumps are cheaper, coming in at around £1,500-£3,500, whilst air-to-water pumps can cost anywhere from £8,000 to £18,000.

Is A heat pump heating expensive to run?

Ground source and air source heat pumps can provide significant savings over traditional heating systems, due to their low running costs.

For example, a ground source heat pump can reduce energy bills by up to  50% compared to a new gas boiler.

Do you need a boiler with a heat pump?

  1. better and more even heating than a boiler
  2.  a heat pump can do it more efficiently.
  3. A heat pump is more reliable too!

Only extremely cold climates ( temps well below -13 degrees will you get a problem.

Is a heat pump electric or gas?

Heat pumps run soley on electricity, which is one of the reasons they don’t smell and are the best HVAC system for people concerned about air quality.

This is why they are becoming the only choice for off gas grid areas.

Is a heat pump cheaper than a boiler?

A heat pump is often more expensive to install than a boiler.

However the monthly energy use and maintenance of a heat pump can be much less expensive than a boiler over time.

The running costs should be around 30% cheaper too.

Is a heat pump cheaper than gas central heating?

Absolutely – Although Heat pumps are much more expensive to install in the first instance, in the long run they will pay for themselves.

As long as the house is well-insulated you will enjoy the reduction of your energy bills.

Do I still need a boiler with a heat pump?

No – You can completely replace your boiler with a heat pump be it an  Air or ground source heat pump.

A heat pump system will provide all the heat your home needs and runs at much lower temperatures than your boiler meaning a reduction in your bills.

Do you have to change radiators with a heat pump?

Yes You will need to use larger radiators if you upgrade to a heat pump.

Due to the low flow temperatures that heat pumps operate at, your existing radiators will not emit as much heat as they used to when heated by a gas boiler. We recommend that you install radiators that are as least twice as powerful and fit aluminum one s

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels turn the sun’s energy into usable electricity. Solar panels contain electrons, which start moving when hit with direct sunlight. The moving electrons create an electric current, kind of like a stream of electricity, which is then channelled and turned into usable electricity.

The electricity is then sent out of the solar panel through wires, ready to power your gadgets, lights or even your electric vehicle, or it can be sent back to grid and suppliers will pay you for that energy.

How many solar panels does it take to run a house?

A typical home in the Uk needs between 6 and 10 solar panels to power it fully.

The exact number you need will depend on the size of your home and your electricity usage.
