Free Home Improvement Grants – Reduce Heating Bills 2022



Help With Heating Bills – This article is especially for those who are unable or struggling to pay ever increasing heating bills.

There are several Government Schemes /Green home Grants available to help you pay for your gas and electricity bills and to keep warm during the cold weather.

Some of these schemes are only available during the winter so please check before applying



Heating & Insulation Grants From The Government

There are lots of heating & insulation grants available from the government. Many are 100 % Free.

These Include


Free Boiler upgrades –  Free Central Heating -Free Storage Heater Replacement

Free external insulation-  Free internal insulation

Free Loft insulation- Cavity Wall Insulation






2 –Winter Fuel Payment – What Is It?







The winter fuel payment entitles you to between £100 and £300 towards your heating bills.

This grant is paid between November and December to help keep you and your home warm over the winter months.

This grant is non repayable & you must reapply every year to claim your winter fuel payment.



Who can apply for the winter fuel payment?


To qualify for a winter fuel payment for winter 2020-2021, you’ll need to:

  • have been born on or before 5 November 1954, and
  • have lived in the UK for at least one day during the week of 21 to 27 September 2020


Deadline for the winter fuel payment

The deadline for claiming payments towards winter 2020 to 2021 is 31 March 2021.


3 – Warm Home Discount




If you’re eligible, the warm home discount scheme gives you a discount of £140 off your electricity bill.

Payments are made directly to your supplier between September 2020 and March 2021, and you will see this payment as a credit on your energy bill statement.

The warm home discount can be claimed as an addition to your cold weather or winter fuel payments.



Who can apply for the warm home discount?

You qualify for the warm home discount if:
  • you are receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
  • your energy supplier is part of the scheme,
  • your name (or your partner’s) is on the bill
  • you’re on a low income, or
  • you get certain means-tested benefits

4 – Cold Weather Payment

What’s the cold weather payment scheme?

Between 1 November 2020 and 31 March 2021, you could be entitled to extra payments of £25 if the weather drops to or below zero degrees celsius in your local area for seven days in a row.

The cold weather payment is added automatically to your benefit payment.


Who can apply for the cold weather payment?

You could be entitled to a cold weather payment if you receive a range of benefits, including:

  • Pension credit
  • Income support
  • Income-based jobseeker’s allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Universal credit
  • Support for mortgage interest


5 – Energy Supplier Support


Contact your energy supplier and tell them you are unable or struggling to pay for your energy bill.

By law your gas and electric supplier is obliged to find a way to support you.

They cannot just stop your gas and electric supply without giving you a range of ways to pay of your bill.


How Can Your Energy Supplier Help?

  • A payment plan can be implemented for you to pay your bill.
  • Debts can be spread out over future bills
  • You can be put on a Pre-Payment meter and existing debt can be added to it


6- Switching Energy Supplier
