How Does An Air Source Heat Pump Work ?

 

They work a bit like refrigerators in reverse.

An air source heat pump takes heat from the air and boosts it to a higher temperature using a compressor.

It then transfers the heat to the heating system in your home.

Depending on your property size and heating requirements, you should expect to pay between £400 – £800 on average per year to run your pump for both heating & Electric.

This should save you over a third of your usual costs to run gas and electric.

Radiators For Air Source Heat Pumps – Can you use normal radiators?

Air source heat pumps will work with normal radiators.

They absorb heat from the outside air and convert it into a fluid, which is then heated with a compressor and sent to your home’s hot water system.

That being said, heat pumps work best with radiators that are 2.5 times larger than the standard size.

This is because they release heat more slowly and at a slightly lower temperature than boilers, around 40° C compared to 60 °C for boilers.

A larger surface area will help disperse heat so that your home will feel the same as it would with a boiler.

Aluminium radiators are better at releasing heat at a lower temperature, compared to steel or cast iron radiators.

This is because aluminium is a better heat conductor than some other metals.

It depends on whether you are claiming a benefit and are eligible under the ECO 4 Scheme.

You will need to be off gas to qualify too.

This scheme requires you to pay a contribution as you will only get a £5000 grant towards the cost.

Are Heat Pumps Noisy ?

Heat pump noise is often equivalent in volume to a refrigerator a dishwasher or a vacuum cleaner. This is around 40 decibels with the legal limit being 42 Decibels.

Noise levels will vary depending on the make and model of the appliance or heat pump, so it’s always best to check with the manufacturer regarding the noise level of your chosen heat pump to be sure.

You need to be aware that fitting a heat pump outside could cause noise for your neighbours so siting should be carefully considered.

Once your chosen installer has confirmed an installation is eligible for a grant and you’re happy with the quote, the heat pump installer will apply to energy regulator Ofgem for the grant on your behalf.

Once your application has been reviewed Ofgem will issue a voucher confirming the grant amount.

The firm will then have three months to complete the installation.

Upon completion a ‘microgeneration certification certificate’ will be issued to you that will confirm all eligibility criteria has been met.

You can submit this to Ofgem which will pay the grant amount directly to the installer.

You’ll be sent a bill for the outstanding amount.
