According To Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert the cost of living has skyrocketed across the board in the UK with many basic human needs being subject to up to 20% price increases for 2022.
This has put a lot of pressure on peoples finances and many more people are now in fuel poverty as a result.
What Has Gone Up In Price?
- Many households are now forking out around £60 more per month for their gas and electricity due to April’s energy price cap increase of 54%.
- Council tax, national insurance, mobile, broadband and water bills also went up in April amid a backdrop of soaring inflation.

- Fuel has gone up 20% meaning higher prices for goods and services.
Cost Of Living Payment To Help With Energy Bills
The chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has had to step in to help people with this crisis and has announced a £15bn package of measures to help UK households deal with inflation.
These new energy grants will assist many people who are struggling to keep afloat as a result of this massive hike in bills across the board.
These include discounts on energy bills and payments to low-income households to help them keep up with rising costs.

How much will I get from the cost of living payment?
Pensioners could receive another £500 to help with heating bills, while those on state benefits will be given £650
Winter Fuel Payment Increase
The winter fuel payment will also be boosted.
8 million pensioners who receive the winter fuel allowance will also be paid a one-off “pensioner cost-of-living” payment of £300.
Pensioners could receive up to a total of £850 in support this year, assuming they qualified for the council tax rebate announced earlier in 2022.
Who qualifies for the £650 cost-of-living payment?
- Benefits Claimants will be paid a one-off “cost-of-living” grant of £650.
- Meanwhile six million people on disability allowance will receive a one off payment of £150 in September,
In total, vulnerable and low income households will receive £1,200 in additional state support this year.
How does the £650 cost of living payment work?
To get the first payment you will need to be on eligible benefits from May 25 2022.
Households receiving means-tested benefits will get an additional cost of living payment of £650 – in two instalments.
Pensioners will be entitled to a £300 payment and those who claim disability benefits will receive £150.

How will it be paid?
Those who claim the benefits attached to these payments will automatically receive the money directly into their bank account, without having to make a claim.
It will be tax-free and not limited by the benefit cap, which restricts how much claimants can receive.
The pensioner payment will go to all those who receive the winter fuel payment and will be paid at the same time .
To qualify, they need to be over the state pension age between 19-25 September 2022.
The disability payment will be paid in September.
Those who received non-means-tested disability benefits – or had made a claim – as of 25 May are eligible
How will the energy bill discount work?
£400 discount or grant will not need to be repaid.
In England, Scotland and Wales, the money will be credited to the accounts of customers who pay by direct debit or with cash or a cheque.
For those on prepayment meters the money will be applied to the meter or sent in vouchers.
