Running an oil boiler tends to cost about 25 % more as running a gas boiler.

You will still be able to use your oil boiler after the 2026 ban, but when it eventually stops working you will not be able to replace it on a like for like basis.
Oil boilers will not be manufactured anymore so you will need to find a different way to heat your home.
How Efficient Is An Oil Boiler?
Oil is very expensive to use as your main fuel but it is a more efficient fuel than gas or LPG.
Modern oil boilers can have efficiencies of around 85% to 95%.
A new condensing oil boiler will typically have an efficiency of at least 90% while a non-condensing oil boiler will be around 85% efficient.
Older oil boilers tend to be 60% to 70% efficient. Boilers decrease in efficiency as they age, so the longer you have it, the less efficient it becomes.
This is because oil boilers use nearly all of the heat and additional gas that’s created from the burning of fuel, turning this into extra heating energy so there’s less wastage. This means you’ll get a good return on every unit of energy.
Will Oil Boilers Be Banned?
Yes, the UK government has announced plans to completely phase out oil boilers in the UK . LPG boilers will also be affected too.
Originally, the ban for new oil boiler installations was set to start in 2026, but this has now been delayed.
The new target is to phase out oil boilers by 2035.
From 2035, it will no longer be possible to install new oil boilers in any homes in the UK .
Existing oil boilers can still be used, but when they need replacing, homeowners will need to switch to alternative heating systems, preferably renewable heating.
What are the alternatives to oil boilers from 2035 ?
There are several alternatives to oil boilers.
Gas Boilers:
If your home is connected to the gas grid, a gas boiler can be a straightforward replacement. They work similarly to oil boilers but use natural gas as fuel
Electric Boilers:
These convert electricity into heat to warm water and your home. They are efficient and have lower installation costs, but running costs can be higher depending on electricity prices.
Air Source Heat Pumps:
Extract heat from the outside air and transfer it indoors. They are efficient but work best in well-insulated homes
Ground Source Heat Pumps: Capture heat from the ground and are very efficient, though they require significant outdoor space for installation
Biomass Boilers:
Use organic materials like wood pellets or logs to generate heat. They are a renewable option but require storage space for the fuel
LPG Boilers: Use liquefied petroleum gas, which is a cleaner alternative to oil. They are suitable for homes not connected to the gas grid
Hydrogen-Ready Boilers:
These are designed to use a mix of natural gas and hydrogen. They are currently being trialed and could become more common in the future.
