Buying A House With Warm Air Heating?

If you are currently buying a house with an old warm Air heating system installed we recommend Rip it out and put an  air source heat pump in or convert to central heating.

Both options will be much cheaper to run. The  heat pump won’t involve having mains gas connected to the property, and gives you aircon in the summer too.

We recommend you first try to get a grant to convert to free central heating.

Full central heating system cost?

A new central heating system cost in the UK generally falls between £3,500 and £7,000.
This can vary depending on a number of factors. This price will get you a full central heating system that includes a boiler, radiators, heating controls and pipework.

What Is Hot Air / warm air heating ?

During the 1960’s and 70’s warm air systems were commonly installed in homes due to their reliability and ease of installation.

Johnson & Starley were the most popular units that were fitted and many are still in service today.

There was no need for pipes and radiators to be installed within the home as the heat is distributed via ducting.

Mainly found in smaller homes  who found this heating  very cost effective and warm air heating is still present in about 6% of all UK homes.

How Does Warm Air Heating Work?

Warm air heating systems use a vent to extract air from outside which is then heated over a gas flame.

This heated  warm air is then circulated via different ducts throughout your home.

Most warm air systems are gas fired, but you do get electric ones too which are much more expensive to run.

For servicing and repairs, we recommend you use only warm air heating engineers from professional websites as this is a specialist field to work on your warm air  heating system.  All engineers will need the relevant warm air qualification as well as experience with this type of heating.

What is the best replacement for Gas Hot air heating?

Homeowners looking to replace their warm air heating system will often choose to a ‘wet heating system‘ with a modern gas boiler and radiators.
This tends to be a much simpler installation and provides an efficient and cost-effective means of providing heat and hot water to your home.

Cost of electric heating system replacement

Another option for upgrading your heating system is electric storage heaters. These are a suitable option for homes that aren’t connected to the gas grid.

You can expect to pay on average £4,370 to install a full electric heating system from scratch.

Of course, the cost as always depends on the size of your home. But remember that running costs with electric systems do tend to be higher than gas-powered heating systems.

Is warm air heating expensive to run

The running cost of your Johnson & Starley warm air heating system depends on what fuel it uses and how energy efficient your home is.

Gas fired warm air  is the more cheaper option compared to electric.

Old warm air heating systems will be around 30% more costly to run and are now considered outdated.

Are old warm / hot air heating systems any good?

Warm Air was a very popular form of heating for domestic properties in the 1960s & 1970s  as they were more reliable compared to other central heating systems of that time.

However, 1970s warm air systems do not provide the same level of efficiency and controllability for todays home heating and we recommend you you either replace it or upgrade to a better heating system such as gas CH.

Benefits of Warm Air Heating

Warm Air Heating

A modern air system provides fast warm up times and will heat your home quickly.

The setup eliminates the need for radiators giving you more freedom in terms of room layout.

Warm air systems are renowned for their quiet operation so your home won’t be disturbed by unwelcome noises.

These systems are very energy efficient with running costs as much as 18% lower than some other types of heating system.

Some modern systems have electronic controls to deliver a stable temperature and give you even greater control of your energy use.

Warm air systems can include the option of electronic filtration which regularly removes 95% of all airborne particles such as pollen, human and pet hair and bacteria.

Cons Of A Warm Air System

You will need an alternative source of heating for your water which is another expense and thing to go wrong.

A  gas boiler or immersion heater is the usual scenario.

Retrofitting ducts or vents into a house can be difficult and will mean having visible ducts in throughout and drafts to circulate..

As there are relatively few manufacturers and installers the market for warm air systems is not as competitive as that of gas boilers so prices are high and options are limited

A warm air system will move air and therefore dust throughout your home which can be a problem for people who suffer with allergies

Is there Asbestos in Warm Air Heating?

An old warm air heating system usually  contains asbestos insulation.

Asbestos cement sheets should not be broken up and need to be sealed in heavy-duty polythene sheets or bags that are double wrapped.

We recommend that you use a specialist asbestos company for its removal.

John & Starley Warm Air Heating

Johnson and Starley are the market leaders in warm air heating and have been providers of comfort since 1922

The journey  began in Blackpool nearly a hundred years ago when two businessmen Mr Johnson and Mr Starley  opened a small but ambitious garage business.

Johnson & Starley was soon producing warm air heating systems utilising waste oil from their garage.

how much to remove a hot air heating unit.

If you are looking for a complete removal of an old warm air system and not replace it with a heat source, we estimate you will pay up to £1000 for its removal and to dispose of the rubbish.

Are old warm air heating systems any good?

Although Gas  Warm Air Heating Systems have fallen out of fashion in new properties, they have been one of the most efficient kinds of heating on offer over the past 4 decades.
Warm Air was a very popular form of heating for domestic properties in the 1960s & 1970s as they were a lot more reliable compared to other central heating systems of that time.
However, when compared to today’s ‘wet’ central heating systems  ( Gas boilers and radiators)  these older systems are now redundant as they do not provide the same level of efficiency or controllability.
Warm air heating systems can be an effective choice for homes that are well-insulated, single-story spaces such as bungalows and flats, as well as some commercial properties. They are typically managed through the use of a thermostat
