Cost of electric heating system replacement

Another option for upgrading your heating system is electric storage heaters. These are a suitable option for homes that aren’t connected to the gas grid. You can expect to pay on average £4,370 to install a full electric heating system from scratch. Of course, the cost as always depends on the size of your home. But remember that running costs with electric systems do tend to be higher than gas-powered heating systems.
What is the best replacement for warm air heating?

Can you change warm air heating to radiators?

Yes, it is possible to change your warm air heating system to a wet system that works with water-filled radiators.
If you have an older home you may have a hot air system as they were popular in the UK in the 1960s and 70s before boiler technology became more advanced and energy efficient.

How Does Warm Air Heating Work?

Warm air heating systems use a vent to extract air from outside which is then heated over a gas flame.
This heated warm air is then circulated via different ducts throughout your home.
Most warm air systems are gas fired, but you do get electric ones too which are much more expensive to run.
Gas Fired Warm air central heating although quite old fashioned but is still is present in about 6% of all UK homes.
Are Warm Air Systems Still Available?

The Johnson & Starley Warmcair range was launched in 2013 and is now their main product.
This is a room sealed modern design . Being a modern design, it can’t re-use the old chimney flue, however in some cases this can be replaced with their concentric flexible flue system.
The MultiCalor Udara is made in Belgium and sold across Europe, including the UK. Udara works in a different way to Warmcair and is more efficient, but does not offer a hot water heating option.
Although Gas Warm Air Heating Systems have fallen out of fashion in new properties, they have been one of the most efficient kinds of heating on offer over the past 4 decades.
Warm Air Heating Engineers

For servicing and repairs, we recommend you use only warm air heating engineers from professional websites as this is a specialist field to work on your warm air heating system. All engineers will need the relevant warm air qualification as well as experience with this type of heating.
All engineers registered on the below associations will have been vetted and approved before being allowed to be on the register.
- Warm Air Repairs
- Warm Air Servicing
- Warm Air Replacement
- Free Upgrade To Central Heating
Warm Air Heating Servicing & Cost

Like their gas boiler counterparts warm air heating will still need to be serviced on an annual basis by a gas safe engineer.
Johnson & Starley the manufacturers should be your first point of call. The going rate for a warm unit to be serviced by a registered Warm Air Heating engineer seems to be around £75 -100
Regular servicing will ensure that the warm air which is continually being blown around is free of dust and debris which can cause a breakdown .
Please ensure the engineer has the relevant warm air qualifications when booking.

Warm Air Heating - Yearly Servicing

A warm air unit servicing checklist includes:
- Removing the burner.
- Removing the filters and fan.
- Checking the heat exchanger for cracks to ensure that products of combustion cannot leak out.
- Checking the flues with smoke pellets.
- Cleaning the burners and pilot lights.
- Reassembling the warm air unit.
- Checking the gas efficiency and testing any gas connections for leaks.
- Analysing the products of combustion.
Warm Air Unit Installation

Although most properties in the UK are heated using a boiler and radiators, there are still many houses that use warm air central heating systems.
Warm air units are similar to air conditioning units in the way that they blow air around ductwork and out through grilles or vents throughout the house.
The air is normally heated by way of a gas burner and is controlled by a room thermostat and a time switch.
Warm Air heating is still installed today albeit at a lesser rate with the majority of the UK preferring a wet central heating system.
Benefits of Warm Air Heating

There are many benefits that a warm air heating system can bring to your home:
A modern air system provides fast warm up times and will heat your home quickly.
The setup eliminates the need for radiators giving you more freedom in terms of room layout.
Warm air systems are renowned for their quiet operation so your home won’t be disturbed by unwelcome noises.
These systems are very energy efficient with running costs as much as 18% lower than some other types of heating system.
Some modern systems have electronic controls to deliver a stable temperature and give you even greater control of your energy use.
Warm air systems can include the option of electronic filtration which regularly removes 95% of all airborne particles such as pollen, human and pet hair and bacteria.
Cons Of A Warm Air System

You will need an alternative source of heating for your water which is another expense and thing to go wrong.
A gas boiler or immersion heater is the usual scenario.
Retrofitting ducts or vents into a house can be difficult and will mean having visible ducts in throughout and drafts to circulate..
As there are relatively few manufacturers and installers the market for warm air systems is not as competitive as that of gas boilers so prices are high and options are limited
A warm air system will move air and therefore dust throughout your home which can be a problem for people who suffer with allergies

Is there Asbestos in Warm Air Heating?

An old warm air heating system usually contains asbestos insulation.
Asbestos cement sheets should not be broken up and need to be sealed in heavy-duty polythene sheets or bags that are double wrapped.
We recommend that you use a specialist asbestos company for its removal.
How long does it take to install a new warm air heating system?

Depending on the replacement heating system you’ve chosen, installation can take around three to five days.
Homeowners looking to replace their warm air heating system will often choose to a ‘wet heating system’ with a modern gas boiler and radiators.
This tends to be a much simpler installation and provides an efficient and cost-effective means of providing heat and hot water to your home.
John & Starley Warm Air Heating

Johnson and Starley are the market leaders in warm air heating and have been providers of comfort since 1922
They have long been recognised as a company at the forefront of innovation in the UK domestic heating and ventilation market.
The journey to establishing such a reputation began in Blackpool nearly a hundred years ago when two businessmen – by the names of Mr Johnson and Mr Starley – opened a small but ambitious garage business.
Thanks to a clear vision, pioneering spirit and no small amount of hard work, Johnson & Starley was soon producing warm air heating systems utilising waste oil from their garage.
Many warm air systems that were fitted in the 60s and 70s are still going strong today but we do recommend that while grants are available, you consider a free upgrade to central heating
What Is A Warm Air Heating System?

During the 1960’s and 70’s warm air systems were commonly installed in homes due to their reliability and ease of installation.
With a warm air heating system there is no need for pipes and radiators to be installed within the home as the heat is distributed via ducting.
Smaller homes found this heating to be very cost effective and is present in about 6% of all UK homes.
Although Warm Air Heating Systems have arguably fallen out of fashion in new properties, they have been one of the most efficient kinds of heating on offer over the past 4 decades.
A modern warm air system is highly efficient and very quiet and heats up a house using warm air rather than water-filled radiators.
They can be gas fired or electric and were very popular in 70s built homes
Some warm units have circulators installed so they can also provide hot water.
Johnson & Starley were the most popular units that were fitted and many are still in service today .

Gas fired warm air is the more cheaper option with electricity being more expensive.
Having said that, Warm air is up to 20% cheaper to run than a gas fired central heating system.
Whilst Warm Air is A good form of heating, we do recommend you upgrade to central heating

Buying A House With Warm Air Heating?

If you are currently buying a house with an old warm Air heating system installed we recommend……………… Rip it out and put an air source heat pump in or convert to central heating.
Both options will be much cheaper to run.
The heat pump won’t involve having mains gas connected to the property, and gives you aircon in the summer too.
You could go for an air->water ASHP and put radiators in if that’s more your thing but the cost is likely to be over £10K ti install.
We recommend you first try to get a grant to convert to free central heating. See Above

Gas Warm Air Heating - Can You Still Get It?

As warm air heating has largely fallen out of favour, not many providers still offer these systems.
You may be better replacing your system with a gas-fired boiler and radiator system, or even an electric heating system.
If you do like your warm air system but want something more up-to-date, you can expect to pay from £500 for a more modern warm air boiler.
But if a new installation is needed, the cost of upgrading warm air heating across the whole system could add up to around £5,000.
