How To DIY Loft Insulation - Measure First

Fitting insulation is not rocket science!

Measure the outside walls of your home and times them together to give you a rough square meterage of your loft.

E.g  a semi detached house measuring 6 meters by 8 will give you 48 sq meters. Deduct 10 % from this figure will give you an approx meterage for your loft.

In this case you will need  to buy  45 square meters of insulation.

Alternatively, get into the loft  and measure the area in m2 (length x width = number of metres squared) and check the coverage of the rolls.

You can deduct around 10% to allow for ceiling joists

What Is Insulation?

Insulation is simply a material that is fitted to walls or loft etc that acts as a barrier to heat escaping to outside.

The material can be foam or Rockwool or polyeurothane and each will have its own U value which is merely a measurement of how long it takes for a specified unit of heat to pass through it.

With ever rising heating bills, insulation for your home is an absolute must, to keep your heat in your home for as long as possible.

Why A Government Grant For Free Insulation?

Free Government Grants For Home Insulation  are available in England, Scotland and Wales and are funded via the Energy Company Obligation (ECO)  to improve the efficiency of homes.

These Grants have helped many people to lower their heating bills and are funded by  a levy to every fuel bill in the uk .

This is in part to achieve the government’s goal of being net carbon neutral by 2050 but as a main aim of tackling fuel poverty across the UK.

There have been over 2.4 million free installations of insulation since the government brought in the scheme.

Typical Heat Loss From Your Home

Heat loss will depend on your house type but as a rough guide you can expect to lose

  • 25% of its heat through the roof
  • 33% through the walls
  • 15% through the floors

Are There Insulation Grants For Park Homes?

I Wish ! We have been waiting for years for Park Homes to be included in the Free Eco Grants Scheme to no avail.

The Government have no interest in helping people who live in Park Homes unfortunately.

This is probably down to the fact that mobile homes are so small and do not save much carbon and so not good for statistics.

I cannot see there being any change in this policy in the future too.

This is a shame as there is massive demand for Park Home Grants

Why Home Insulation Is So Important?

Consumer protection magazine Which? found that installing home insulation to your loft and walls can reduce your energy bills by up to £300 per year.

A typical home without insulation can lose 33% of its heat through its walls and 25% through the roof.

What Are The Recommendations For Home Insulation.

All loft insulation should have a recommended depth of 270 mm.

Cavity Walls Should be insulated with bead or rockwool.

Homes with solid walls should consider internal or external wall insulation.

Why do I need to have ventilation measures installed in my property?

When insulating a property it’s important to have adequate airflow throughout the property.

Warm Front Funding requires that all installers install ventilation measures. These include mechanical ventilation such as extractor fans to the kitchen and bathrooms, trickle vents to windows, and under door cuts.
You will not get a grant if you refuse to have ventilation measures unfortunately.
