What Is A Back Boiler ?
A back boiler sits behind a fireplace and heats up your hot water using some sort of solid fuel such as coal or wood.
Back boilers are usually connected to a hot water cylinder on the next floor and works by convection.
The water heated by the boiler rises into the cylinder and uses gravity to feed the hot water to taps in the kitchen and bathroom.

Baxi Bermuda Gas Fired
The Baxi Bermuda was the number 1 boiler in the 1960s and was installed in many homes in the UK.
These gas back boilers were very energy-efficient and cheaper than using coal to heat your home.
Coal open fire back boiler
This type of open fire back boiler uses solid coal fuel to heat up hot water which is sent to your hot taps and central heating system.
There aren’t that many of this type of back boiler about anymore and coal isn’t the cleanest fuel to burn. They are also very messy and take up lots of upkeep.
Are Back Boilers Now Illegal?
Yes, back boilers have been illegal to install into new homes since 2005
It is not illegal to still have a back boiler fitted in your home and you are not required to have it removed and replaced.
How Long Do Baxi Bermuda Back Boilers Last
Back boilers will usually last for around 25 years and possibly more provided they have been well maintained and serviced regularly.
There are some back boilers still in service after 40 years but they will be very expensive to run unfortunately.
