How Much Does It Cost to Replace Warm Air Heating?

Most full conversions cost £4,000–£7,500, depending on:

  • Size of the property
  • Number of radiators
  • Boiler type (combi or system)
  • Pipework complexity
  • Whether floors need lifting

🔧 What’s Included in a Full Conversion?

A typical warm‑air‑to‑radiator upgrade includes:

  • Removal of the old warm‑air unit
  • Installation of a new gas boiler
  • New copper or plastic pipework
  • Radiators in each room
  • Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
  • Smart thermostat (optional)
  • Safe disposal of old equipment
  • Gas Safe certification

🏡 How Long Does Installation Take?

Most homes are completed in 2–5 days.
Properties with good under‑floor access are usually quicker.

🔄 Combi Boiler or System Boiler?

Combi boiler (most common)

Ideal for small and medium homes. Provides heating and hot water without a cylinder.

System boiler

Better for larger homes or high hot‑water demand. Works with a hot water tank.

📈 Will This Improve My EPC Rating?

In most cases, yes.
Modern boilers, TRVs, and smart controls typically improve EPC scores compared to older warm‑air units.

🧰 What Happens to the Old Ducts?

Warm‑air ducts are not used with radiator systems.
They can be:

  • Removed
  • Left in place
  • Boxed in
  • Repurposed during renovations

Your installer will advise based on your home layout.

What is warm air heating?

Warm air heating uses a gas‑fired unit to blow heated air through ducts. It was common in homes built between the 1960s and 1990s.

Why do people replace warm air heating?

Many systems are old, noisy, and inefficient. Spare parts can be difficult to source, and temperature control is limited compared to radiators.

Is gas central heating more efficient?

Yes. Modern condensing boilers are significantly more efficient than older warm‑air units and provide more consistent heat.

Do I need new pipework?

Yes. Warm‑air systems use ducts, not water pipes. A full conversion includes new pipework and radiators.

Can I keep my ducts?

Ducts are not used with radiator systems. They can be removed or left in place.

How long does the conversion take?

Most installations take 2–5 days depending on property size and layout.

Will this increase my home’s value?

In most cases, yes. Radiators and a modern boiler make the property more appealing to buyers.

Do I need planning permission?

No. Heating upgrades fall under permitted development, but work must comply with Building Regulations and be carried out by a Gas Safe engineer.
