my boiler is broken and i have no money

Here are a few steps you might consider to help you out:

  1. Contact Your Local Council: Sometimes local councils have emergency funds or programs for urgent repairs like a broken boiler. It’s worth giving them a call to see if there are any schemes you might qualify for.

  2. Energy Company Services: Some energy companies offer repair services and may have special payment plans or support for customers in financial hardship.

  3. Charitable Organisations: There are charities that help with emergency home repairs. You could reach out to organisations like Turn2us or the Home Improvement Agency that provide assistance.

  4. Grants and Loans: There are various grants and low-interest loans available for home improvements. You might qualify for a Green Deal Loan or other local government-led schemes designed for energy efficiency improvements, including boiler repairs.

  5. Local Support Groups: Sometimes local community groups or support networks can provide emergency assistance or advice on what to do next.

Are There grants for windows and doors from government

Yes, there are government schemes and funding options available to help with the costs of installing new windows and doors. Although some of these aren’t specific grants for windows and doors alone, they do cover energy-efficient improvements that include window and door replacements. Here are a few options you might explore:
  1. Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) Scheme: This scheme provides funding for energy-efficient home improvements, including new windows and doors, for qualifying low-income households.

  2. Home Upgrade Grant (HUG2): This grant is available for low-income households, particularly for properties with poor energy efficiency ratings. It covers new windows, doors, and draught-proofing.

  3. Affordable Warmth Scheme: This scheme is available in Northern Ireland and provides funding for draught-proofing windows and doors, and replacing single-glazed windows for households earning below a certain income threshold.

  4. Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan: In Scotland, this grant and interest-free loan aim to help homeowners upgrade from single glazing and improve energy efficiency through draught-proofing.

Free Boiler When On Benefits -FAQ

The Free Boiler Scheme has been running for over 10 years, offering UK residents on qualifying benefits the chance to replace their old, inefficient boilers for free. Funded by energy companies like British Gas under the ECO4 initiative, the scheme is designed to improve energy efficiency for low-income households that claim a qualifying benefit.

Replacing a boiler can cost between £3,000 and £5,000—a price many low-income families can’t afford. The scheme helps eligible households by fully covering these costs through energy company funding.

The scheme is funded by major energy companies under the UK’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) program, including:

  • British Gas
  • EDF Energy
  • E.ON UK
  • npower
  • Scottish Power

No, boiler grants are 100% free and do not require repayment.

To qualify for the scheme, you must:

  • Own your home (private tenants and social housing are not eligible).
  • Have a boiler installed before 2005.
  • Live in a property with an EPC rating of E, F, or G.
  • Be in receipt of a qualifying benefit, such as:
    • Universal Credit
    • Pension Credit
    • Income Support
    • Child or Working Tax Credits

To be eligible, the existing boiler must:

  • Be non-condensing. (Fitted Before 2005 )
  • Be below 85% efficiency.

The following boilers typically do not qualify:

  • Boilers installed after 2005.
  • Broken boilers under 19 years old.
  • Most combi boilers.

The LA FLEX (Local Authority Flexible Eligibility) program allows certain households not on benefits to qualify for energy efficiency grants. Eligibility depends on income (below £31,000), EPC rating, and other criteria set by local councils.

Simply complete an application form and provide proof of your eligibility, such as:

  • Income documents (tax returns, payslips, etc.).
  • EPC rating of your home.
  • Evidence of qualifying benefits or LA FLEX criteria.

Most non-benefit applications are rejected. However, you can still:

  • Apply for free loft insulation.
  • Be added to our database in case funding changes in the future.
  • Explore the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for discounted heat pumps.

No, the boiler does not have to be faulty. However, it must have an efficiency rating below 85%.

No, the scheme does not reimburse the cost of privately purchased boilers.

No, servicing is not covered. A boiler service typically costs around £60 and ensures your system runs safely and efficiently.

Disability benefits like PIP and DLA no longer qualify for the scheme. Applicants must meet standard benefit requirements.

Homes without central heating may qualify for free first-time central heating installation. Visit our Free Central Heating page for more details.

This program provides homeowners up to £7,500 towards a heat pump when replacing a fossil fuel boiler. Heat pumps reduce energy bills by 30% and are seen as the future of home heating.
