Can I Apply For A Free Boiler Retrospectively
We do get some people who were not aware of the Grant For New Boiler Scheme and have purchased a new boiler privately and then found out they were entitled to the grant. They would like to see if they can claim back the price of the boiler they have paid out from the scheme retrospectively.
Unfortunately, this is not possible and you will not get anywhere by going down this route.
Does The Boiler Have To Be Faulty To Qualify For The Free Boiler Scheme
The boiler has to be below 85% efficiency which most non condensing boilers are. It does not necessarily have to be faulty to qualify for the free grant.
Our engineers have to do a thorough test including Energy efficiency tests, combustion and safeness tests to qualify it.
This does not apply to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme where all home owners can apply.

Free Boiler When On Benefits -FAQ
The Free Boiler Scheme has been running for over 10 years, offering UK residents on qualifying benefits the chance to replace their old, inefficient boilers for free. Funded by energy companies like British Gas under the ECO4 initiative, the scheme is designed to improve energy efficiency for low-income households that claim a qualifying benefit.
Replacing a boiler can cost between £3,000 and £5,000—a price many low-income families can’t afford. The scheme helps eligible households by fully covering these costs through energy company funding.
The scheme is funded by major energy companies under the UK’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) program, including:
- British Gas
- EDF Energy
- E.ON UK
- npower
- Scottish Power
No, boiler grants are 100% free and do not require repayment.

Simply complete an application form and provide proof of your eligibility, such as:
- Income documents (tax returns, payslips, etc.).
- EPC rating of your home.
- Evidence of qualifying benefits or LA FLEX criteria.
Most non-benefit applications are rejected. However, you can still:
- Apply for free loft insulation.
- Be added to our database in case funding changes in the future.
- Explore the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for discounted heat pumps.
No, the boiler does not have to be faulty. However, it must have an efficiency rating below 85%.

No, servicing is not covered. A boiler service typically costs around £60 and ensures your system runs safely and efficiently.
